Arkhangai /MONTSAME/ A fine-designed ancient well was discovered by the ‘Orkhon’ Mongolian-German joint team of archaeologists in the ruins of Ordu Baliq last autumn. Several items including two varnished wooden columns, large gold-plated lock, marble lions, wooden tomb, bronze bell with Chinese writing and various clay utensils were found at the bottom of the well.

The findings are currently preserved at the Center of Cultural Heritage in Ulaanbaatar and restoration works are being implemented in collaboration with German and Japanese restoration experts. Currently, they are working on the restoration of 50 cm golden lock. However, the experts found it difficult to restore the bronze bell with Chinese writing. A Tibetan scholar has read the writing ‘Eight melodies and ten songs were offered to the Blue sky’. Moreover, the bell was still ringing. German scholar Hendrik Rolland noted “It was exciting to hear a 1200-year-old bell ring”.

Imprints of the stamp on the monument of Uyghur King found in Bulgan aimag were found on the clay vases and pots. Archaeologists say that the well findings are over 1200 years old and have been preserved since the Kyrgyz destroyed the city of Ordu Baliq in 840.
