Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On March 1, a discussion on strengthening government and administrative activities and improving legal environment for hazardous waste was co-organized by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was held.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, General Agency for Special Inspection, Mongolian Agency for Standardization and Metrology, National Emergency Management Agency, hazardous waste experts and NGOs participated in the discussion.

In Mongolia hazardous waste is disposed with other household waste due to lack of integrated system for collection, transportation, recycling, and eco-friendly waste disposal and some are being stored in non-designated areas, creating a risk of pollution and accidents.

“Hazardous household wastes include wastes such as batteries, medical or medicine trash. There are quite a few private recycling companies operating in Ulaanbaatar. However, 2300-2700 tons of garbage per day cannot be recycled on time. We are planning to focus on that” said the specialist of the Capital city Governor’s Office, Z.Mungunzul.

At the end of the discussion the attendees suggested that storage places for hazardous wastes should be chosen carefully, waste compatibility should be ensured, waste accumulation time and conditions should be considered, appropriate packaging materials should be chosen, wastes must have appropriate labels, detailed records and regular checks should be conducted, safety of employees should be considered and hazardous wastes must be sorted.
