Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) jointly organized a national consultation on reducing maternal and infant mortality on November 22.

Deputy Health Minister L. Byambasuren, State Secretary of the Ministry D. Ochirbat and WHO Representative a.i. in Mongolia Dr Sergey Diorditsa headed the consultation. More than 100 participants attended the consultation, including health workers and specialists, scientists, representatives of non-government organizations and governors and deputy governors of aimags. The consultation provides participants with an opportunity to share experiences and discuss cooperation issues.

As a result of policy actions of the Health Ministry, under-five mortality rate decreased to 19.9 percent per 1000 live births as of October, 2017.

During the consultation, Deputy Health Minister L. Byambasuren said, “We have compiled a book based on the result of a survey on factors that caused maternal and infant mortality. The book will be very helpful to health workers and specialists to learn from previous lessons and to prevent from mistakes. Also, the ministry is working to improve health education of citizens.”

Also, State Secretary D.Ochirbat said, “The survey was carried out  over the last five years and relevant trainings were frequently conducted. The works indicate positive results. As compared with the same period of previous year, the maternal mortality rate decreased by 15 cases, infant mortality by 81 cases and under-five mortality by 372 cases. We are very anxious that majority of the deaths were possible to be prevented. For instance, some mothers died due to late comings to hospitals and irresponsible acts of health workers. Thus, neo-natal services need to be on focus. Standards and regulations must be strictly followed.”
