Construction Minister meets ADB Country Director

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Newly appointed Minister of Construction and Urban Development Kh.Badelkhan met Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegates on his first day in office.

During his meeting with ADB representatives led by Country Director Yolanda Fernandez Lommen, the Minister appreciated ADB’s the active support to the Ministry over the years, expressing his readiness to strengthen the cooperation. Since 1997, ADB has invested USD 303.9 million into construction and urban development sector.
Congratulating the Minister on his appointment, Country Director Yolanda Fernandez Lommen handed over a list of projects and programs to be co-implemented with the Ministry within the framework of the 2017-2021 Mongolia-ADB Partnership Strategy, which has recently been adopted and introduced two ongoing projects.
In particular, following the successful implementation of a construction and urban development project in towns near borders in Umnugobi and Dornogobi aimags, ADB is financing the construction of sewage facilities in four aimags – Uvurkhangai, Umnugobi, Arkhangai and Dornogobi aimags. The project is expected to complete within this year. Moreover, a USD 18 million project titled 'Darkhan Wastewater Management' is underway, and the project is at the consultant selection stage at present.
Arnaud Heckmann, ADB Senior Urban Development Specialist, also briefed the Minister about projects being co-implemented with the Ministry and proposed project – Aimag and Soum Centers Regional Development Investment Program. The program outcome is population and private sector in targeted regional urban clusters benefit from improved urban and economic facilities and services. The Japan-funded project will be implemented in six aimags in three phases.
The Urban Development Specialist also touched upon two projects proposed for the capital city- Ulaanbaatar Pro-Poor Urban Redevelopment Support System for Ger Areas and Ulaanbaatar Affordable Housing and Urban Renewal Project.
For his part, Construction Minister Kh.Badelkhan said that wastewater issue is an area of focus for the Ministry, commending the works of ADB in this field. “During this time of economic difficulty, it is highly important to implement projects dealing with economic diversification and regional connectivity,” he said.
