Construction of highway to new airport started

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Prime Minister Ch.Saikhanbileg addressed Friday a ceremony for starting construction of highway to link the capital and new international airport in Khoshig Valley, Tov aimag.

In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister said this project is a new milstone in the history of the infrastructural and road sector of Mongolia.

“In the period between 1938 and 2012, a total of 2,964 km paved roads were constructed, whereas roads of total length of 3,405 km have been built from 2012 until today,“ he said adding that 1,535 km roads and 1,346 km reinforced concrete bridges are expected this year.

“This highway will be the very first of its kind in Mongolia and will connect the capital city and the new international airport under construction. When operated, the highway will open a new chapter in the development of Mongolian road sector, bringing new standards and technologies,” said Saikhanbileg.

According to the feasibility, the total distance of the two-way highway will be 30.4 km with six lanes. To be funded with a soft-loan from the Exim Bank of China, the construction works will be performed by the China TIESIJU Civil Engineering Group in period of 34 months. The construction works are projected to complete by July of 2018. 

Present at the ceremony were S.Bayartsogt, Head of the Cabinet Secretariat for Government; M.Zorigt, Minister of Road and Transportation; parliamentarians; Gao Hucheng, the Chinese Minister of Commerce; Xin Haiming, the Ambassador of China to Mongolia; and other high-officials.
