Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. The Asia Foundation`s Women`s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Project, supported by the Government of Canada through the Global Affairs Canada, launched its first satellite branch of the Women`s Business Center in Arvaikheer, Uvurkhangai aimag on November 22, 2021.

Chairman of the Citizen`s Representative Khural of Uvurkhangai Mr. Purevdorj O., Country Representative of the Asia Foundation Mongolia Mr. Mark Koenig, Deputy Governor of Uvurkhangai Ms. Undrakh S., and local women entrepreneurs delivered opening remarks. In addition, H.E. Catherine Ivkoff, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Mongolia, delivered virtual opening remarks to over 40 guests representing Uvurkhangai administration, public and private sector, civil society organizations, financial institutions, and women entrepreneurs of Uvurkhangai.

Following the opening ceremony, Mr. Mark Koenig and the WEE team members met with the Governor of Uvurkhangai, Mr. Ishdorj A., and Deputy Governor Ms. Undrakh S. to discuss ideas for further cooperation to support women entrepreneurs in Uvurkhangai. The group also took the opportunity to visit the Made in Uvurkhangai center, where many women entrepreneurs are currently selling their products.

Uvurkhangai has over 20,000 women who actively participate in the economy, of which 12,000 are women entrepreneurs operating an informal business. Expanding the activities of the Women`s Business Center, including business training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, beyond the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, is one of the critical priorities of the WEE program. The WBC Uvurkhangai will support women locally and serve as a model for other rural locations in Mongolia to support women`s economic empowerment and create a women-led supply chain.
