“Karakorum 800-year – History, Heritage” int'l scientific conference held

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Under the auspices of Speaker of the Parliament G.Zandanshatar, “Karakorum 800-year – History, Heritage” international scientific forum was held virtually on December 17 at the National Library of Mongolia.


In his letter sent to the conference attendees, Speaker G.Zandanshatar remarked that Karakorum is not only the ancient capital of Mongolia but also precious historical and cultural heritage to be honored and proud by Mongolians. According to the history, Karakorum city, an incredible complex with combination of nomadic and sedentary civilization was political, cultural, religious and trade hub that connected Asia and Europe in the peak of its prosperity. Therefore, conserving this rare and precious historic heritage, passing down to our younger generation and developing it in compliance with modern standard is our honored duty.


Furthermore, Karakorum’s development issue has been in the center of the Mongolian government policy. Construction of “Millennium road” adopted in 2001 by the parliamentary resolution No.9 is relevant to the announcement of Great Chinggis Khaan as “Man of a Millennium” globally. Moreover, it was outlined in Mongolia’s long term development policy “Vision - 2050” to provide support on the national archeological development, keep national values, restore historical sites and monuments including the ruins of Karakorum city as well as to establish specific museums, funds and research centers in directions of archeology, paleontology and ethnography. The development policy document also reflected a goal to select location of the new capital in the Orkhon Valley, develop feasibility study and general development plan and commence its construction works in 2021-2030." Therefore, the Speaker underlined that the scientific conference is significant for the further development of the historic city.


Scholars and researchers including President of the International Association for Mongol Studies, Dr. Agnes Birtalan, renowned U.S. scholar, Dr. Jack Waterford, Ambassador of Hungary to Mongolia, Mongolist Borbala Anna Obrusanszky and Head of Karakorum Society and Doctor of Historical Science D.Khoroldamba attended the conference, delivering presentations under 20 topics.
