ECMO apparatus installed at State Central First Hospital

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ In frames of the works to ensuring preparedness in a time of the spread of novel coronavirus and improving quality of hospital aid and service, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) apparatus, an extracorporeal technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support, has been handed over to the State Central First Hospital by the order of the Ministry of Health with financing from the State Emergency Commission.
During the handover ceremony, Minister of Health T.Munkhsaikhan said that the Ministry of Health is working towards ensuring heightened state of readiness for disaster protection for not spreading in the country the COVID-19 infection, which has been globally spread. The novel coronavirus infection primarily affects lung. Thus, the person suffers from hypoxia. While, it is possible to revive lung function before the person suffers from hypoxia thanks to the ECMO apparatus. Furthermore, intensive treatment is advancing to a new level in Mongolia. The apparatus also creates a condition to prepare patient for cardiac surgery and provide the patient with oxygen to support his/her heart function when surgery instruments are awaited. In addition, it also enables the patient, who is expecting a donor for organ transplant surgery, to be provided with prolonged cardiac support until he/she finds a donor.
Additionally, a two-day theoretical and practical training on usage and safe operation of ECMO apparatus is being conducted virtually by Chinese doctors and specialists at the hospital.
