Children’s book released to help children cope with COVID-19
Society
Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. 'My hero is you', a story book that
aims to help children aged 6-11 understand COVID-19, is now available in a
video format in Mongolian. USAID and WHO supported its production so that the
book can reach as many children as possible throughout Mongolia. Its
translation in Mongolian was supported by Save the Children in Mongolia.
With the help of a fantasy creature, Ario, the book explains how children can protect themselves, their families and friends from coronavirus and how to manage difficult emotions when confronted with a new and rapidly changing reality. The book should be watched by a child or a small group of children with support from a parent, caregiver or teacher.
In addition to the video version, a limited number of
printed books is now available for children in all regions of the country. WHO
and USAID supported the production of 10,000 copies and handed over to the
National Center for Mental Health for dissemination to 9 districts and 21
aimags. Save the Children in Mongolia will disseminate 3,750 copies to the
National Emergency Management Agency, Authority for Family, Children and Youth
Development and local counterparts in target 7 provinces and 3 districts of
Ulaanbaatar.
'My hero is you' is a project developed by the Inter-Agency
Standing Committee Reference Group on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in
Emergency Settings, a unique collaboration of United Nations agencies, national
and international nongovernmental organizations and international agencies
providing mental health and psychosocial support in emergency settings.
The story was shaped by more than 1,700 children, parents, caregivers and teachers from around the world who took the time to share how they are coping with the impact of COVID-19. The input was invaluable to script writer and illustrator Helen Patuck and the project team in making sure that the story and its messages resonated with children from different backgrounds and continents.
