Energy sector cooperation with Australia discussed

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Parliament Member, Minister of Energy Ts.Davaasuren received Ambassador of Australia to Mongolia Dave Vosen.


Sides exchanged views on possibilities of expanding the cooperation in energy sector. Stressing that Australia and Mongolia cooperate in mining sector and big players in the world’s coal market, the Ambassador noted it is advisable to develop coal energy along with renewable energy. Moreover, he emphasized that it is possible to cooperate with Mongolia on natural gas and coal seam methane gas as Australia is experienced in this field. Furthermore, the Ambassador mentioned their experience in energy and renewable energy.


Minister of Energy Ts.Davaasuren congratulated the Ambassador Dave Vosen on his appointment and highlighted the friendly relations between the two countries especially in energy sector. Mentioning that Mongolia puts high importance not only in mining, but also in agriculture,  he briefly introduced the policy, mid-term program and construction works in the field of renewable energy.


During the meeting, sides held conversation on “Tavantolgoi-Thermal Power Plant” which is aimed to provide south part of Mongolia including large mining deposits such as Oyu Tolgoi, Tavantolgoi with reliable energy. Minister of Energy Ts.Davaasuren also emphasized that the plant should be commissioned by 2023 under the agreement made between the Government of Mongolia and Rio Tinto. The Ambassador Dave Vosen expressed that the Embassy of Australia to Mongolia will take any measures to support this.
