Dornogobi /MONTSAME/. At the initiation of the Denver Zoological Foundation of the U.S, Dornogobi aimag’s Citizens’ Representative Khural, ‘Confederation for the Protection of Endangered Species of Mongolia’ NGO and the authority of the Ikh Nart Nature Reserve jointly organized the ‘Ikh Nart Pasture Management’ discussion in Sainshand city on August 21-22.

Representatives of the aimag’s Citizens’ Representative Khural and the Governor’s Office, authorities of Dalanjargalan and Airag soums, experts, citizens of Bayanjargalan and Undurshil soums of Dundgobi aimag, researchers of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, scholars and representatives of the Denver Zoological Foundation, staff and rangers of the nature reserve participated in the discussion.

As it has become increasingly necessary to manage the pasture of the Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, the discussion is important in protecting the area from mining, creating appropriate balance of pasture, and increasing citizens’ participation in protection of nature. Thus, participants of the discussion put forth various suggestions such as having most herders protect the pasture, promoting appropriate use of water, increasing the citizens’ knowledge on environmental protection, and restrict mining activities near the region.

Situated across Dalanjargalan and Airag soums of Dornogobi aimag, the Ikh Nart Nature Reserve has a large number of historical artifacts alongside being the most northeastern point of settlement for Gobi Argali. The Nature Reserve is operated by local financing and management and by changing the classification of it as Natural Complex Area it is possible to further expand scope and range of operations on environmental protection and combating against poaching.

The Nature Reserve has been working in partnership with the Denver Zoological Foundation since 2000, and is currently successfully monitoring wildlife in collaboration with the Institutes of Biology and Archeology at the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the National University of Mongolia and the Mongolian National University of Education.
