NEMA aims to increase applications of space technology in disaster protection

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ /Working group meeting of the Action plan on Applications of Space Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) was held in Bangkok, Thailand between May 31 and June 2.

Major and Chief of Spatial Information and Technology Division of the National Emergency Management Agency D.Sodnomragchaa attended the meeting from Mongolia. He presented a report on the applications of space technology and the Internet-based disaster spatial information system in Mongolia.

Representatives from over 20 countries participated in the meeting and introduced their applications of space technology (remote sensing satellites and communication satellites) and practical experience of using it for disaster risk reduction.

During the meeting, Action plan on Applications of Space Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific was discussed, 41 potential objectives were selected of Sendai Framework’s 17 goals and 78 objectives and an action plan on applications of space technology for implementing these was formulated.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency, they are aiming to increase the applications of space technology in disaster protection activities, to develop internet-based disaster spatial information systems and to train staff in the applications of space technology.

Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency that has experience in applying of space technology and launching satellite from Asian countries, Japan, Korea, China and India emphasized the possibility of using their satellite data for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development in Asia-Pacific region.  

They also made a decision to reformulate the cooperation plan on sharing data of remote sensing satellites between the nations.
