Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Parliament has discussed and adopted a resolution on the expansion of the Consulate General of Mongolia in Kyrgyz capital city to an embassy.
Minister of Foreign Affairs D.Tsogtbaatar submitted the draft resolution to the Speaker of Parliament, which was backed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy on February 1, 2017. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs forwarded its proposal to the Kyrgyz side, which then approved the promotion of the status of the Mongolian Consulate General in Bishkek.
Mongolia established diplomatic relations with Kyrgyzstan in 1992, since then bilateral ties have been continually developing in political sphere with increased frequency of reciprocal visits. There are 18 agreements effectively regulating bilateral cooperation at present, and 10 more documents are on agenda. There is no political conflict between the two countries, and Mongolia considers Kyrgyzstan as its important partner in the Central Asian region.
Several MPs expressed disapproval of the establishment of an embassy, saying it would burden the budget, while MP J.Enkhbayar supported the promotion of status. “There will be no increase in staff number and no burden on budget,” he said, highlighting the diplomatic significance of an embassy. The Parliament voted up the resolution by 69.2 percent.
Currently, more than 50 Mongolians reside in the country with 500 people traveling to the country on average per annum. Bilateral trade volume amounts USD 600 thousand.
