Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolians are celebrating the International Women’s Day with activism against gender-based violence today, which is marked as a public holiday across the nation.

The celebration, traditionally on every household level, has expanded to women’s march and demonstration, calling to end domestic violence and crimes against women.

The Mothers’ Association under the Fair Civil Trial NGO organized a half-naked demonstration named ‘We Have No Reason for Celebration’ on the central square today. The demonstrators called for decisive action from the Government and corresponding bodies to end domestic violence and other issues the society confronts. “While unemployment and poverty continue to increase, we have nothing to celebrate,” the demonstrators said. The demonstration is planned to be held every year until unemployment and poverty are tackled. An offering lamp kindling event will be held in memory of all victims of domestic violence in the evening on the central square.

On the other hand, the global One Billion Rising movement found itself in Mongolia on this International Women’s Day. Civil society organizations for human rights and universities co-organized a women’s march themed ‘One Billion Rising’ on the central square. Unofficial sources say that about a thousand people took it to the square for this year’s march.

The Mongolian Youth Federation also organized its annual march themed ‘Powerful Women are the Bridge to Peace’. The organizers said that the peaceful march embodies an ambition to seek solutions to the existing gender-based issues, corruption and other problems instead of only criticizing. The march also calls for the discussion of women’s rights throughout the year rather than addressing them on March 8.

At the same time, a forum of thousand women with the Glorious Mother order is taking place in the State House today. The forum is being held under the auspices of the President. Mongolian women who gave birth to four or more children receive the Glorious Mother order.

The forum is being held for the 11th year, addressing the challenges women face in the Mongolian society and the solutions. The 2018 forum is focusing on inclusion of mothers with many children in the apartment projects run by the Government.

President Kh.Battulga sent a letter for the opening of the forum, in which he pointed out the lack of women’s representation in public service and leading positions. “As I have been meeting the people across the country, I have observed that women are more active in expressing their views. Women aren’t asking for money or welfare, they demand justice. I appreciate the existing legal environment which favors women and single mothers, and will work towards creating the opportunity for them to purchase an apartment with more simple conditions,” the President said.
