Parliament backs appointment of Ambassador to South Korea

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On December 15, Parliament discussed and approved the appointment of former head of General Intelligence Agency B.Khurts as Mongolia’ Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.
The discussion took place under a closed regime and was attended by 40 MPs, who voted up the appointment by 92 percent.
Last month, the Cabinet took a decision to re-appoint D.Gerel as head of the General Intelligence Agency and appoint outgoing chief B.Khurts as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, which was then sent to the President for consent and was backed. As a result, the appointment was discussed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy on November 15, and was voted up by 78.6 percent.
However, certain MPs proposed to organize an public open hearing on the appointment and the open hearing took place on the same day as the Parliament's discussion of the issue.
The Parliament’s approval of the appointment of Mongolia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea will have to be confirmed by the President.

Major General B.Khurts has previously served as First Secretary at the Mongolian Embassy in Hungary and Turkey, Department Head at the General Intelligence Agency, Chief Representative of the Mongolian Airlines in Seoul, Head of Executive Office of the National Security Council and Deputy Director of the Independent Authority Against Corruption. He worked as Director of the General Intelligence Agency from November, 2014 to November, 2017.
