International scholars discuss Mongolian maps and geographical names

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Today August 23, an international scientific conference “Mongolian maps and toponymy” opened at the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS). The Institute of History and Archeology, MAS, International Association for Mongolian Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies of Japan, and Mongolian Place-Name society are jointly organizing the conference.

About 30 scientists and researchers representing 12 institutions from 5 countries, including Waseda University, Warsaw University, Inner Mongolia Press Education Commission, and Buriat University are participating the conference, presenting new findings and results of their studies related to maps, printed in Mongolia and abroad and meanings of geographical names. The conference aims to widen scope of studies on map and toponymy (study of place names), which is significant part of history and culture heritage and join efforts of scientists. The conference will continue on August 25.
