Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The annual International Museum Day is being held today, on May 18 under the theme “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in Museums” in front of the National Museum of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar.

On this day, museums in Mongolia, namely National Museum of Mongolia, Mongolian Natural History Museum, Bogd Khan Palace Museum, State History Museum of Mongolia, Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs, Choijin Lama Temple, Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum, Mongolian Military Museum, Mongolian Theatre Museum, Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery and Ulaanbaatar City Museum presented their activities for this year's theme.

During the opening ceremony, Head of the Department of Arts and Culture Ts.Erdenebat noted Mongolian Museums' lack of initiation towards the society and foreign countries. He said “The Mongolian people have unique and historical cultural heritage. However, museums in Monoglia are attracting only the historians and researchers, lacking the initiatives to attract general public and tourists. For example, many of high school students may lack historical knowledge about Mongolia. Therefore, public awareness on the importance of museums and exhibitions must be raised".

Also, Head of International Council of Museums in Mongolia, D.Tsedmaa said “Around 45 museums are operating in Mongolia. And a number of galleries and private collectors have increased in recent years, help preserving the historic and cultural heritages of Mongolia. On the other hand, a number of tourists are increasing each year, as well as number of Mongolians interested in museums. And it shows the public involvement in safekeeping the cultural heritage of Mongolia".

Created by the XI assembly of the International Council of Museums in Moscow, 1977, the celebration took place for the first time in May 18, 1978 in over 150 countries around the world. Since then, the International Museum Day has become a tradition for the museums of every country to celebrate under certain theme on May 18. As for Mongolia, this day was celebrated for the first time in 2003 and is now facing 14th consecutive year, as of today.
