Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ During the few weeks preceding the celebration of Lunar New Year, traffic jam in Ulaanbaatar escalates drastically due to increased traffic from provinces and to major malls and shopping centers. In an early attempt to control the traffic jam during Lunar New Year which falls this month, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold issued an ordinance today, February 1.

The ordinance was introduced by Colonel B.Batbold, Head of Traffic Regulation Division of Ulaanbaatar Traffic Police Department. In accordance with the ordinance, vehicles with license plate numbers ending in even digits are allowed to engage in road traffic on Saturdays, February 11 and 18 whereas those with odd numbers are allowed on Sundays, February 12 and 19.

In addition, expanded markets of meat and dairy products will be set up in 6 central districts of Ulaanbaatar so as to reduce traffic jam to the biggest markets, and save time and fuel.

The ordinance also authorizes that there will be no traffic restriction based on license plate number on the first three days of Lunar New Year, namely February 28, 29 and 30.

On the days with traffic restrictions, public transportation will be accessible to distant destinations such as Narantuul or Khuchit Shonkhor markets.
