Irrigated crop land to be expanded by 12 percent

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The inception workshop for the USD
46.2 million project ‘Vegetable Production and Irrigated Agriculture’ to be
implemented by the government of Mongolia in collaboration with the Asian
Development Bank and the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction took place on September 8.
As part of the project to be implemented in Khovd,
Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Bayan-Ulgii, Selenge, Tuv, and Khentii aimags between 2020
and 2026, 12 irrigation systems will be upgraded, thus allowing irrigated vegetable,
fruit, berry, wheat, and fodder product farming across 7,000 hectares of land.
Moreover, 3,500 rural households will be provided training on vegetable
farming.
The project is expected to improve income of smallholder
vegetable farmers by supporting climate resilient crop farming. Specifically,
at the workshop, it was noted that the project will increase the total area of
the country’s irrigated farmland by 12 percent.
