Mongolian Fine Art Masterpiece ‘Khot Ail’ 1961

In this edition of the series ‘Mongolian Fine Art Masterpiece’ brought to you by MONTSAME News Agency in cooperation with Mongolian National Art Gallery, we are presenting the artwork, ‘Khot Ail’ (herdsmen camp) by State Honored Cultural Figure Damdinsuren Dulamjav.
The artwork was painted on a 100x150 cm canvas using oil paint in 1961. With the setting as a pleasant summer day, he illustrated horses, sheep, cows, and camels--four of the five primary species of livestock in a narrative style in aims of depicting the nomadic culture and traditional livestock herding. Each and every one of the animals’ actions is clearly defined in a way that is unrepeatable.
Although the artist made an attempt to express the volume of each figure through lights and shadows with his skillful technique using oil paint, the setting of the livestock animals, their orderly formations and intricate details for all of them highlight the features of the transition stage from traditional Mongolian painting techniques to those of Europe.
As he was a craftsman specialized in figures of Buddha and deities, artist D.Damdinsuren was self-taught in European painting techniques. It is common for his works to noticeably highlight the unique features of Mongolian art.
