38 new coronavirus cases reported, total reaches 1,175

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Today’s daily briefing by the Ministry of Health gave latest update on COVID-19 situation in Mongolia. Total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases now stands at 1,175, and 745 patients of them are currently being treated. 


On December 28, a total of 14,035 PCR tests have been performed at laboratories at the National Center for Communicable Diseases and National Center for Zoonotic Diseases in Ulaanbaatar city and in Darkhan-Uul, Selenge and Orkhon aimags. As a result, 38 people have been diagnosed to have the virus. 


36 of the newly registered cases are related to the cluster infections at Bayanzurkh District’s Hospital in Ulaanbaatar city, where first positive cases started to be detected by December 16, resulting in ongoing strict lockdown in the capital city from December 23 until January 06 to prevent from further transmissions. 


The newly confirmed cases related to the hospital include 2 nurses and 1 employee of the hospital, 6 patients and 4 people who were taking care of the patients, and 17 family members who are close contacts of previous positive cases detected at the hospital, as reported by the Health Ministry. 


Other two new COVID-19 patients are a nurse of the Central Military Hospital and a passenger arrived on charter flight from Frankfurt, Germany this month. 


There are now 226 cluster infections reported at the Bayanzurkh Hospital, including 22 healthcare staff and 204 patients and their family members. 


Within the past day, there has been no new positive coronavirus cases reported in Selenge, Darkhan-Uul, Gobisumber, Orkhon, Arkhangai and Dornogobi aimags. Earlier, December 27, it was presented at the meeting of the State Emergency Commission that Mongolia’s 20 aimags out of 21 had not reported any new coronavirus cases in the past 23-30 days, and it is now safe to consider them as COVID-19 free regions.
