Ekhiin Gol Appeal approved during Gobi Great 6 annual meeting

The Third Meeting of Gobi Great 6 took place at Ekhiin Gol, Shinejinst soum of
Bayankhongor aimag at the initiative of the Governor’s Office of Bayankhongor
aimag, the Department of Enviroment of Bayan-Ulgii aimag, and the World
Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The meeting aimed at preserving
eco-system of Gobi region by protecting its species with participation of
attendees and jointly implementing their actions in the future.
The action to promote ‘Gobi
Great 6 or GG6’ as Mongolian brand is continuing for the third year. The six Gobi animals namely wild
Bactrian camel, Gobi bear, Takhi (Przewalski's horse), Khulan (wild ass),
Goitered Gazelle and Saiga Antelope play crucial roles in Gobi region ecosystem.
The meeting was held with participation of about 250 people
such as Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism Ts.Batbayar, Governor of
Bayankhongor aimag G.Batjargal, authorities from the National Police Agency,
international organizations, non-governmental organizations, representatives of
Bayankhongor, Khovd, Zavkhan, Gobi-Altai and Umnugobi aimag, administrations of Great
Gobi A and B Strictly Protected Areas and so forth.
The attendees highlighted the importance of realizing Mongolian people's role in protecting environment, developing responsible mining and increasing
public engagement in making decision regarding mining.
During the meeting, Governor of Bayankhongor aimag G.Batjargal put several proposals. He suggested that protecting and rehabilitating core areas that are important to GG6 species, especially, restricting movement of people and livestock near oasis of Ekhiin gol. On the other hand, he called on authorities of aimags to develop mechanism to finance the GG6 initiative, establish an accredited fund and each aimag to accumulate MNT 50 million every year.
Combining the suggestions, proposals and initiatives, the participants approved
‘Ekhiin Gol Appeal’ at the end of the third meeting.
According to Ekhiin Gol Appeal, the stakeholders should predetermine possible risks and challenges of weather condition, reduce human and livestock
impact on environment and take biotechnology measures if necessary.
