Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On July 5, MP and head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment, Food and Agriculture L.Eldev-Ochir met with representatives led by UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific Kundhavi Kadiresan.

MP B.Saranchimeg, Mr Vinod Ahuja, who is to be appointed as the FAO Representative in Mongolia and Assistant FAO Representative in Mongolia G.Nyamjargal were present at the meeting.

MP L.Eldev-Ochir briefed on the Law on livestock health and the Law on genetic resources of the livestock. "Mongolia is a nomadic herding country. Even though the number of livestock reached 60 million, its productivity is insufficient. Tendency of increase of livestock diseases, especially epidemic diseases, is causing negative impact on meat export. In order to solve this problem, Parliament approved the laws on livestock health and genetic resources, which came into force on June 1 of this year. According to a study, approximately 70 percent of pasture land is degraded. Hence, the Standing Committee on Environment, Food and Agriculture intends to get approval of the draft law on pasture land during autumn session of the Parliament in collaboration with the Government. We are also focusing on reducing the import of wheat and vegetables, and improving its security and hygiene” said the MP, requesting support in this direction from the FAO.

Ms Kundhavi Kadiresan expressed readiness to provide technical advice and assistance in all fields of agriculture sector, and emphasized the importance of comprehensive solutions to the policy and legal environment.
