Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With around 40 percent snow cover on the national level, meteorologists warn about the possibility of black and ‘hoof’ zud in some parts of the country.

Black zud is a situation where herders lose livestock due to lack of snowfall, and ‘hoof’ zud refers to serious lack of and extreme damage to livestock grazing areas due to over-flow of livestock migration.

“Herders are engaging heavily in winter camping and migration due to lack of pasturelands as about 70 percent of the territory were under drought last summer,” said Ch.Sarantuya, expert at the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring (NAMEM).

The NAMEM has detected high risks of zud in the neighboring territory between Khovd, Uvs, Gobi-Altai and Zavkhan aimags, south of Bulgan, north of Uvurkhangai, western parts of Tuv and south parts of Sukhbaatar and Dornod aimags. “There is a need to take preventive measures in the above regions and distribute aids evenly,” she said.

Speaking to a MONTSAME reporter, the meteorologist also touched upon weather forecast for the rest of the winter, noting that December had seen warmer temperature levels and less snow than the multi-year average.

January is the coldest month of Mongolian winter. It has been forecasted that temperature will drop slightly lower than the multi-year average in north-eastern region, especially central and eastern region parts of the country in January. In February, temperature will remain warmer than January on the average.
