Mongolia Chairs UN 2026 International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists

Ulaanbaatar, November 17, 2025 /MONTSAME/. At the initiative of Mongolia, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) during its 2022 session. Mongolia currently chairs the Steering Committee, which is responsible for coordinating the global campaign.
The Steering Committee convened on November 13, 2025, at the headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italian Republic. The session was chaired by Narantungalag Tserendorj, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the FAO, who emphasized the pivotal role of healthy rangeland ecosystems in sustaining pastoral livelihoods, fostering inclusive economic growth, and enhancing ecological resilience for sustainable development.
During the session, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay was elected Co-Chair of the Steering Committee. Delegates reviewed and endorsed core components of the International Year, including its strategic framework, thematic priorities, funding modalities, launch, outreach and advocacy plans, and the official campaign logo.
The meeting convened over 40 participants, comprising delegates from FAO member states, representatives of international and regional organizations, and senior officials from the FAO Secretariat, participating both in person and via virtual platforms.
