Ulaanbaatar, September 9, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The agricultural sector of the Kingdom of Bhutan has successfully conducted an embryo transfer of Mongolian yak.
During a meeting with State Secretary of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry (MoFALI) of Mongolia, Jambaltseren Tumur-Uya, the Bhutanese delegation expressed interest in learning from Mongolia’s expertise in artificial insemination and embryo transfer of horses and sheep. Pursuant to the agreement between the Heads of State of the two countries to strengthen cooperation in the agricultural sector, Mongolia dispatched deep-frozen embryos of yak, sheep, and horse to Bhutan last year.
Tobchu Ragbay, Head of the Research and Technical Team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Bhutan, underlined that this support in improving livestock genetics has proven highly effective, noting that the embryo transfer of Mongolian yak has been successfully implemented in Bhutan.
The Bhutanese delegation is visiting Mongolia from September 8 to 14 to study the country’s livestock production practices. Their itinerary includes Gobisumber, Arkhangai, Orkhon, and Darkhan-Uul aimags, where they will gain practical experience in artificial insemination and embryo transfer of yak, horse, and sheep. The study programme is jointly organized by MoFALI’s Department for the Implementation of Livestock Policy and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
In 2024, MoFALI and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Bhutan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Technical Cooperation for the Development of Highland Animal Husbandry and Pasture. At the current meeting, the two sides reviewed the progress of cooperation under this memorandum.
