Ulaanbaatar, September 8, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Today marks International Literacy Day.

This year, it is being observed worldwide under the theme 'Promoting Literacy Learning in the Age of Digital Transition,' highlighting that technology is opening new opportunities for reading, writing, and knowledge creation while expanding equitable access to education.

In Mongolia, the day is officially being celebrated for the first time at the initiative of the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, in cooperation with the National Library of Mongolia and the Lifelong Study Center of Bayangol District, Mongolia. Activities have been organized for students of the 'Naran' International School to study the Mongolian script, appreciate cultural documentary heritage, and be inspired to pursue lifelong education. The students were welcomed at the National Library, where Director Ichinkhorloo Bayarkhuu introduced a program on the rich collections of the library and initiatives to encourage children to study the traditional Mongolian script and value cultural heritage. The students became acquainted with the library’s operations and collections and the Museum of Rare and Valuable Books, and will participate in lessons on the history of Mongolian literacy, digital use of the Mongolian script, and Mongolian calligraphy.

Since its proclamation in 1966 by UNESCO, following the recommendations of the 'World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy,' the International Literacy Day has been observed globally to ensure equitable participation for all in becoming literate, raising the level of education and culture, and contributing to social development.
