Under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) Grant Aid program, several projects aimed at enhancing the drinking water supply for the capital city have been implemented. These include the “Groundwater Resource Exploration for Water Supply” (1991–1996), Phase I of the “Master Plan for the Urgent Rehabilitation of the Water Supply System” (1997–2000), Phase II (2005–2007), and the “Gachuurt Water Source Project” (2012–2014).

As a result of Japan’s support and cooperation, Ulaanbaatar’s capacity for water collection, distribution, and monitoring has significantly improved, accompanied by the modernization of its technical infrastructure and technologies.

His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, who studied hydrology at the University of Oxford, wrote his graduation thesis on river transport along the Thames during the 18th and 19th centuries and later authored the book “The Thames and I: A Memoir of Two Years at Oxford”.

His Majesty has maintained a lifelong commitment to the study of hydrology and regularly participates in international forums such as the World Water Forum, continuing his research at an advanced academic level.
