The Bogd Khaan's snow leopard skin ger restored

A project on restoration of the Bogd Khaan's snow leopard skin ger has been completed with funding of the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.
On December 2, U.S. Ambassador Michael Klecheski, Director of the Bogd Khan Palace Museum Ts. Erdenebaatar, Director of the National Center for Cultural Heritage B.Enkhbat and other officials participated in the reopening of the Bogd Khaan's snow leopard skin ger.
Ambassador Michael Klecheski noted that it was an honor for the U.S. Embassy to be able to contribute to the preservation of this beautiful and historic cultural treasure on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of VIII Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutagt.
“This leopard skin ger is truly unique, beautiful, and has incredible historic and cultural significance. I am glad that is has been restored so that future Mongolians and visitors can appreciate it too. The Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation program is an expression of our deep respect and appreciation for traditional cultural heritage, and our commitment to partnering with Mongolia to promote mutual understanding and connections between our people,” the Ambassador said. USD15 thousand was spent for the restoration.
Sangilagdorj from Setsen Khan province presented this ger to VIII Bogd Jetsundamba in 1893 on the occasion of his 25th birthday. In total, skins of 150 snow leopards were used in making the outer cover for this ger. The door, roof, frame, and roof poles are decorated with Mongolian traditional patterns. This ger used to be set up outdoors in times of clear weather and VIII Bogd used to practice meditation in it.
