Eleven-headed Janraisig

Khuvsgul /MONTSAME/. One of the many rare exhibits being
kept in the museum of Khuvsgul aimag is the gilt-copper sculpture of Eleven-headed
Janraisig (Avalokiteshvara).
This sculpture, standing on a lotus, has eleven heads and eight arms, with nine of the heads wearing golden crowns. The main hands are joined before the heart, praying, the upper ones hold a rosary and a mala, the middle ones hold a wheel and a bow, while the lower right hand is palm out to express generosity and the left one holds a ritual water pot.
The sculpture was created around late 19th to early 20th century and was brought to the museum by museum’s employee D.Jambal in 1962.
