Mongolia Hosts Regional Workshop on Air Quality and Environmental Cooperation

Ulaanbaatar, September 25, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The “National Workshop on Air Quality Management in Mongolia: Development and Prospects” is being held in Ulaanbaatar on September 24, 2025.
Organized by the North-East Asia Regional Office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the workshop was convened in conjunction with the 28th Senior Officials Meeting (SOM-28) of the North-East Asian Subregional Program for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC). It brought together over 40 representatives from the NEASPEC Secretariat, Mongolia, the Russian Federation, China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan.
The workshop addressed Mongolia’s current air quality status, management practices, relevant policies and regulations, and institutional linkages. Participants discussed challenges and opportunities for cooperation, and exchanged information on regional efforts related to air pollution, low-carbon cities, desertification, land degradation, biodiversity, and nature conservation.
The strategic plan, budget, and results framework for 2026-2030 were reviewed and endorsed. Member States and international organizations also shared national policies and initiatives aimed at advancing environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia.
State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Zolbayar Togtokhjargal, highlighted in his opening remarks, “Mongolia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) in August 2026. The outcomes of SOM-28 will make an important contribution to COP17 and to strengthening regional cooperation.”
The North-East Asia Clean Air Partnership (NEACAP), supported by UNESCAP and other organizations, aims to foster collaboration among countries in Northeast Asia, including Mongolia, China, South Korea, and Russia, to address air pollution and promote sustainable development.
