Ulaanbaatar, June 11, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Buddha Day, also known as Day of Vesak, Buddha Purnima, Buddha Jayanti or the 15th day of the first summer month in lunar calendar, falls today, June 11, 2025, and Mongolia is observing Buddha Day as an official public holiday.
The Buddha Day is sacred among Buddhists, as it commemorates Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment (Nirvāṇa), and death (Parinirvāna). This day has been celebrated by Buddhist countries in Asia for 2,000 years. The United Nations General Assembly by its resolution 54/115 of 1999, recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity. Since 2019, Mongolia has been celebrating the Buddha Day as a public holiday nationwide.
Mongolia is observing this year’s Buddha Day under the theme “Let’s Spread Peace Together,” to promote compassion, empathy, and loving kindness for Mother Nature, human beings, and family. Events for this auspicious day started from early morning as monks and lay Buddhists took the 24-hour eight precept vows under the guidance of the 30th Chief Khamba Lama of Ganadanthegchenling Monastery Geshe Lharampa Javzandorj Dulamragchaa at dawn and chanting, praying, and teaching sessions, Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, meditation sessions and cultural activities are taking place throughout the country at monasteries, temples, and central squares, particularly at the Ganadanthegchenling Monastery, Center of Mongolian Buddhists, and Sukhbaatar Square.
