Asia-Pacific Broadcasters Convene in Mongolia to Safeguard National Heritage Through Media

Ulaanbaatar, September 12, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The 62nd General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and its associated meetings are taking place in Ulaanbaatar from September 11 to 15, 2025, hosted by the Mongolian National Broadcaster (MNB).


The ABU General Assembly is held annually, each year focusing on a timely and relevant theme. In 2024, discussions centered on the integration of artificial intelligence in broadcasting and media production, with a particular focus on developments in Turkey.


This year, the Assembly highlights the Role of Media in Safeguarding National and Cultural Heritage.”


The Assembly brings together directors, producers, and artists from leading media organizations across 43 countries to discuss current development trends and pressing issues in the television and media industry.


Participants include representatives from Japan’s NHK, China’s CGTN, South Korea’s KBS, Australia’s ABC, Italy’s RAI, and Turkey’s TRT, among others.


Organizing the ABU General Assembly in Mongolia brings significant benefits, including opportunities for media professionals to exchange experiences, expand international cooperation, and promote Mongolia through global media platforms.


The event fosters an international collaboration, facilitates knowledge exchange, and provides networking opportunities to strengthen regional media cooperation.


As part of the event, the ABU Song Festival will showcase performances by Mongolia’s acclaimed folk metal band, The Hu, alongside artists from eight other countries, providing a meaningful platform to elevate Mongolia’s media presence and strengthen international cultural ties.


Zolbayar Ulziibayar, Head of the Media and Communications Department of the President's Office of Mongolia, attended the 62nd ABU General Assembly and conveyed President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa’s appreciation to the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU).


He remarked, the ABU was recognized for its vital role in shaping global broadcasting, advancing the television and radio industry, and fostering international cooperation. The Union’s mission to inform, educate, and inspire audiences was highlighted as essential to global media development.

"Hosting the conference for the second time in Mongolia, renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, underscores the relevance of this year’s theme “Role of Media in Safeguarding National and Cultural Heritage. National heritage is a source of noble values and a foundation for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence." Highlighting Mongolia's commitment to media independence, Mr. Zolbayar noted that 83 percent of the country’s 389 media organizations operate in the private sector. Emphasizing access to media, television, and radio as a fundamental aspect of human rights, freedom, and democratic principles, he extended gratitude to the conference for encouraging all nations to protect and promote their national heritage and for advocating peace through mutual respect.



The ABU, established in 1964, is recognized as a non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political professional association dedicated to advancing broadcasting across the region.


Today, the ABU comprises 272 members from 76 countries and offers a broad range of services in news exchange, joint productions, consultancy, and coordination of regional coverage for major sporting events.
