President Khurelsukh Congratulates Erdenebalsuren on Election as ICC Judge

Ulaanbaatar, December 18, 2023 /MONTSAME/. President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa received Justice of the Supreme Court of Mongolia Erdenebalsuren Damdin on December 15, 2023. President Khurelsukh congratulated Justice Erdenebalsuren on his election to the International Criminal Court, wishing him success in his future endeavors. 


The President noted that the election of the first Mongolian judge to the International Criminal Court is a testament to not only the individual's knowledge and dedication but also to Mongolian growing reputation and strengthening status in the international arena. This historic achievement signifies the trust and respect that Mongolia has earned from international organizations. 


Mongolian Head of State Khuresukh emphasized that Justice Erdenebalsuren now shoulders a momentous responsibility to champion international law and the cause of international criminal justice on behalf of Mongolia. This historic appointment, the President stressed, will forever be etched in gold in the annals of Mongolian justice. 



Expressing sincere gratitude, Justice Erdenebalsuren acknowledged both the President's pioneering initiative in nominating a Mongolian citizen for the ICC in 2021 and the invaluable leadership of Mr. Ya. Sodbaatar, Head of the Office of the President of Mongolia, in guiding the working group and ensuring thorough preparation. The Justice affirmed his commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical and honest conduct in the future, thereby safeguarding the name of Mongolia high. 


The 22nd Session of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP22) to the Rome Statute was organized in New York on December 4-14, 2023. The election of 6 judges of the International Criminal Court for the period of 2024-2033 was held on December 5, 2023. A Mongolian candidate, Justice of the Supreme Court of Mongolia Erdenebalsuren Damdin obtained 81 votes from 114 States Parties in the first round of voting.   



Justice Erdenebalsuren Damdin has over a decade of experience serving at the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Mongolia and 30 years of experience in criminal law and criminal proceedings.


With 18 judges, the International Criminal Court (“the ICC” or “the Court”) is a permanent international court established to investigate, prosecute, and try individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole, namely the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. Currently, 123 countries have joined the Rome Statute of the ICC. Mongolia ratified the ICC Rome Statute in 2002.
