Bayan-Ulgii /MONTSAME/. Kazakh deels are unique for being made with a variety of fancy patterns suited to the person’s body and complexion.

As for hide deels, they are made using hides of sheep, goats, sable, and argali (mountain sheep). Sheepskin deels are divided into two groups: for summer and autumn.

Traditionally, hides have been continuously used in specifically making deels during the first and second months of summer.

The hide deel that is currently being kept at the Local Studies Museum of Bayan-Ulgii aimag was made in the early 20th century, with excellent tailorship. It is one of the unique exhibits of the museum that was received as a donation from Altai soum in 1960.

Once the sheepskin was softened, the deel was painted yellow with the color of a certain type of tree named ‘Rauan’, followed by skillful needlework in the upper and lower flaps as well as sleeves. Lambskin is also sewn around the edges of the deel’s lower flap and sleeves, with fox hide for its collar.
