Historical tourism to be developed in the birthplace of Chinggis Khaan

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Within the Government’s goal to develop historical and specialized tourism, a number of major projects are planned to increase the international tourist arrivals to one million and revenues from the sector to USD 1.1 billion. In this regard, the eastern region will be redeveloped as tourism region and major construction works to attract tourists commenced last year at the sites related to Chinggis Khaan, 13th century history and the Secret History of the Mongols in Khentii aimag, the great khan’s birthplace.

Head of the Cabinet Secretariat L.Oyun-Erdene gave detailed information on objectives and actions of the Government on historical tourism during the ‘Historical tourism and investment’ national conference held under the auspices of Prime Minister of Mongolia on April 22. According to him, a number of tourism complexes including the ‘Mongol Empire’ complex in Binder soum, ‘Valiant warrior Boorchu-Friendship residence’ in Batnorov soum and ‘Shikhikhutag- The Secret Hstory’ in Norovlin soum will be constructed with the investment of MNT 5.7 billion from the state budget. Moreover, the ‘Man of Millenium- Great Chinggis Khaan’ complex will be built in Dadal soum of Khentii aimag with the ADB soft loan of USD 19 million.

Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh noted that the Government of Mongolia named Khentii aimag as the center of historical tourism, Khuvsgul aimag as the center of natural tourism and Ulaanbaatar city as cultural tourism center respectively. In the future, it plans to develop tourism regions in the Central, Western, Eastern, Khangai, Gobi and Ulaanbaatar regions based on the features of its geographical locations and tourism resources, improve service quality and connect to the infrastructure. “I would like to highlight that the Government made a decision to establish the Institute for Chinggis Khaan legacy in Khentii aimag with the USD 38 million soft loan from the ADB and financing from the state budget. Construction of three major tourism complexes and infrastructure investments have commenced,” said Prime Minister.

The Government stopped the issuance of mineral licenses in the three rivers basin and historic sites of Khentii aimag and started taking steps to take these areas under special protection.
