Hermes Center Tunnel Under Construction Using Jacking Technology

Ulaanbaatar, October 24, 2025 /MONTSAME/. As part of the effort to eliminate road-rail intersections and improve traffic flow in Ulaanbaatar, a project to construct underpasses beneath the railway is being implemented at four locations in phases.
According to the Ulaanbaatar City Governor’s Office, construction
of the underpass near the Hermes Center is currently in progress, with
preparatory work on the main structure underway. The tunnel is being installed using
a jacking technology that pushes the structure beneath the railway foundation. Out
of the ten required land plots, four have been cleared, while negotiations are
ongoing with businesses occupying the remaining six. The tunnel structure will
measure 38 meters in length, 12 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in height. The 2,200-tonne
pre-cast concrete tunnel is being pushed into place using eight 500-tonne
hydraulic jacks and two sets of 76-liter oil pump systems. The foundation is
cast from C25 reinforced concrete, and the tunnel is being installed on a 4-meter-wide
sliding platform. Of the total 46.8-meter tunnel, 28 meters have been completed
so far.
This is the first time this tunneling technology has been
applied in Mongolia for an underpass construction project. The project is scheduled
for completion in July 2026, and once operational, it is expected to reduce
traffic congestion in the area by more than 10 percent. The underpass project
is being carried out at four key locations across the city: the Tavan Shar
railway crossing, the Geological Central Laboratory intersection, Narny Road,
and Ikh Khuree Street.
