Ulaanbaatar, July 30, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav visited the archaeological excavation site of the ancient capital Kharkhorum and the Great Khaans’ Garden to review the progress of the Kharkhorum city’s redevelopment plan and the development of the garden on July 26, 2025.

A proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Culture to establish an open-air museum based on the ruins of the ancient Kharkhorum city. The plan aims to create a roofed complex, in line with international best practices, to allow year-round access for visitors while ensuring proper preservation and protection.

The redevelopment of Kharkhorum’s central area is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and includes the establishment of four residential zones around the city center, designed to accommodate a population of 500,000. As part of the project, Kheltgii Tsagaan Lake, which is a rain and flood-fed body of water, will also be restored.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Kharkhorum City Administration and the Water Agency, a government implementing agency. Water supply for the Kharkhorum city is planned to be as follows: 50 percent from groundwater, 25 percent from surface water, and the remaining 25 percent recycled greywater.  Restoration of Kheltgii Tsagaan Lake will involve renovating and reusing an irrigation system built in 1965, which has been inactive since.

Currently, 700,000 trees have been planted and 45 wells dug in the Great Khaans’ Garden, with ongoing maintenance to support tree growth. A total of one million trees are planned to be planted across eight designated locations and the efforts are underway to reach the target during the upcoming autumn planting season.
