‘Novosti Mongolii' essay contest winners awarded scholarships to Russia

On March 11, the three winners of the fourth annual Russian essay contest held by the ‘Novosti Mongolii’ (Mongolian News) weekly operated by MONTSAME national news agency among 11th and 12th grade students were awarded scholarships to study in Russia. The award ceremony was attended by Deputy Director of MONTSAME agency Sh.Batbold, Hero of the Soviet Union, astronaut, Major General J.Gurragchaa, Director of Russian Center for Science and Culture in Ulaanbaatar (RCSC) Amgalan Bazarhandaev and others. Students from not only Ulaanbaatar, but Tuv, Sukhbaatar, and Bayan-Ulgii aimags took part in the contest organized in collaboration with RCSC and the Mongolia-Russia Friendship Society under the theme ‘Far Yet Close Space’ in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Mongolia-Soviet space flight. “The first edition of Novosti Mongolii, the only Russian newspaper in the country, was published in 1942. Our agency reports on every notable event, international relations, social, economic and cultural life. The Mongolia-Soviet spaceflight was also covered by MONTSAME agency” said MONTSAME Deputy Director Sh.Batbold. “So far, seven students have won scholarships through this contest. I express my deep gratitude to RCSC for giving students an opportunity to study in Russia,” he added, thanking other co-organizers of the contest. “The outer space that used to feel far away has made its way into our daily lives. Thanks to satellites and space technology, we communicate via telephone and internet, watch television, and consult the weather forecast. We chose the theme of the contest to make students understand it,” said Mr.J.Gurragchaa. The contest that was participated by students from Russian schools in the country at first has expanded with students from other general education schools in recent years. This year, over 30 students from Russia-Mongolia Joint School No.3, Russian Embassy School No. 14, G.V.Plekhanov School, schools No. 2, 5, and 113, Ulaanbaatar School, and Empathy School submitted their essays to the contest. Essay contest winner E.Tsolmon said, “I took part in the contest for the first time. My father and older brother are pilots. My grandmother and mother worked at an airport. Being an astronaut is my dream from my childhood, as the space attracted my interest very much.” 12th grade student of School No. 14 E.Tsolmon took first place, 11th grade student of G.V.Plekhanov School E.Alirs - second place, and 12th grade student of Russia-Mongolia Joint School S.Erkhee - third place.
