Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. According to the report of the National Emergency Management Agency, 23 soums of six aimags are suffering harsh winter situations—white dzud disaster, whilst 46 soums of 13 aimags are under dzud-like conditions.

Wintering situations in some soums of Uvurkhangai, Arkhangai, Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Dundgobi, Bulgan, Sukhbaatar and Khentii aimags are reportedly worsening or risky to suffer dzud. For instance, most territories or 12 soums of Zavkhan aimag are blanketed in snow, suffering white dzud. The aimag’s administration is taking required measures to distribute hay to herders’ settlements and clean thick snow for livestock grazing.

A dzud is a Mongolian term for a severe winter in which large numbers of livestock die, primarily due to starvation being unable to graze, in other cases directly from the cold. There are various kinds of dzud, including white dzud, which is an extremely snowy winter in which livestock are unable to find nourishing foodstuff through the snow cover and starve.
