Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On March 4, the annual consultative meeting between the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Ministry of Environment of Japan took place to discuss the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Mongolia.

Works, such as mercury assessment, legal analysis and raising awareness, that were done in the frameworks of the implementation in Mongolia since 2006 were introduced at the meeting. “The National Action Plan for Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining has also been implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme. With the support of the Sustainable Artisanal Mining project by the Swiss Development Agency and Cooperation (SDC), four groundwater monitoring wells were installed nearby a mercury-free concentrator,” the officials reported.

Corresponding ministries, agencies, private companies, NGOs as well as the representatives of the Embassy of Japan in Mongolia and scholars attended the meeting to discuss ways to raise public awareness about mercury.
