Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With funding of USD 17.6 million by Khas Bank, 10 mWt solar power plant was put into operation in Sumber soum of Gobisumber aimag. To implement the project, Khas Bank collaborated with Green Climate Fund, establishing financial agreement in November 2017.

The solar power plant is calculated to supply 15.395 mWt electricity to integrated power network while reducing greenhouse gas emission by 12.270 tons and saving 171 million liters of water annually.

Climate-change impact is growing in Mongolia. Due to desertification and pastureland degradation caused by global warming; herders’ movement to capital city has been increased, losing their sustainable livelihood. Having the solar power plant, we would  not only combat with these adverse impacts, also we can contribute to mitigate greenhouse gas emission, Executive Director of Khas Bank M.Bold emphasized.

Mongolia’s ESB Company constructed the plant while Japanese Sanko Seiki Co.,Ltd made investment of most of equipment and devices including 31.000 solar panels, providing with technological solution.

Mongolia set a goal to supply some 20 percent of its energy consumption with renewable energy sources by 2020 and 30 percent by 2030. The project will play pivotal role in accomplishing the goal, said the officials. What’s more, energy production of the solar power plant in Sumber soum makes up 20 percent of total solar power plants in Mongolia and over 5 percent of total renewable energy.
