Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/ Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh is on rural visit to Darkhan-Uul and Selenge aimags, a main agrarian region of Mongolia.

This year, Mongolia has set a goal to harvest 538 thousand tons of grain, of which 518 thousand tons of wheat, 171 thousand tons of potato, 102 thousand tons of vegetable, 64 thousand tons of fodder plants, 34 tons of oil plants and three thousand tons of berries.

On May 14, Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh visited a farmland of ‘Darkhan Elite’ Company of the Plants and Farming Institute of Darkhan-Uul aimag. The company carries out production of elite seeds on over 470 hectares and experimentally grows 3 or 4 species of wheat a year. It harvests around 350-500 tons of elite seeds a year and supplies it to Farmers’ Promotion Fund.

The Institute has produced over 200 species and naturalized 21 species of wheat, which are used for 30 percent of total crops. It also naturalized 13 varieties of potato that are used for 50-90 percent of total crops. Pure elite seeds and super elite seeds are being produced with a purpose to produce new variety of seeds.
“If the institute’s capacity is improved, it will be able to provide all domestic needs of grain. Currently, elite seeds are planted on 1337 hectares in Darkhan-Uul aimag and Zuunburen soum of Selenge aimag, of which 162 hectares are irrigated. Instead of planting rapeseed which degrades the soil excessively, it needs to sow fodder plants in rotation. In addition, we need researchers to study the effects and measures against drought and natural phenomena,” said N.Bayarsukh, director of the Institute.

An important issue touched during the visit was about an establishment of specific farming zone. Alongside the growth of livestock, regulations are required to develop and protect agrarian sector, stressed the aimag authorities.

After being introduced with the activities, Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh said, “One of three main policies of the government is to provide the country with healthy foods and also export foods. If the country is provided fully with oil products, energy and foods, the basic price will be stable. Then the other sector will grow. We are working on the spot because of a necessity to combine public and private partnership and make optimal decisive actions for development of science-based agriculture and farming.”

He also underlined an importance of reaching an understanding with herder communities and making proper management in establishing the farming zone. Moreover, he said that agricultural sector’s policy and organization need to be reconsidered and the branches of University of Agriculture is required to be setup in the farming areas.

In connection with these matters, the PM assigned the corresponding minister to take immediate actions.
