Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Ceremony for commissioning of the building of a Training Center for Forestry was held today. Project on Training Center for Forestry has been under implementation since 2016 executed by KT&G social welfare organization of South Korea and the Ministry of Environment, Green Development and Tourism.

Only eight percent of the Mongolian territory is covered by forests. Due to the rapidness of climate change, ecological imbalance, and especially, human activities, forest sources have been decreasing over the years. The statistics show that a total of 1.2 million hectares of forest areas have been destroyed because of pest insects, illegal logging and wildfires within the last 20 years.

Although there are over 1,600 cooperatives operating for the wellbeing of forests, less than 10 percent of their staff are professionals.

The indispensable project on training forestry specialists is initiated by Green Asia Network NGO, which is officially registered to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and a non-profit organization. The non-government organization was awarded in 2014 the Life Soil Award, granted to role model collectives for conserving and maintaining the surrounding environment. Green Asia Network has been collaborating with the Ministry for the past 15 years in counter-desertification works, rural development and improving people’s participation in decision-making processes.
