Kharkhorin, April 16, 2023 /MONTSAME/.  A few days ago, the CNN highlighted the “Erdenesiin Khuree” center in their “Why 2023 is the year to visit Mongolia” article. In this article, it says “Speaking of giving life to Mongolia’s most ancient traditions, the resurrection of Mongol bichig, or the traditional Mongolian script written from top to bottom and read from left to right, has also seen a major resurgence in recent years. Visit the Erdenesiin Khuree Mongolian Calligraphy Center in Karakorum to learn from master calligraphist Samandbadraa Purev about this important cultural heritage.”

A master calligraphist P. Samandbadra whose art name is Tamir founded the “Erdenesiin  Khuree” center, with the support of the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the French Embassy in Mongolia, and the French Alliance in Ulaanbaatar, in 2018.

The Center is located 600 m south of Erdene Zuu Monastery in Kharkhorum, the former capital and administrative center of the Mongol Empire, and aims to preserve and promote Mongolian calligraphy, registered by UNESCO in 2023 on the list of intangible world heritage. They offer activities and training for everyone who enjoys calligraphy and other art forms, such as painting, ceramics, felting, etc.

As part of their activity, the center successfully organized calligraphy training as art therapy for disabled people and children from orphanages in Kharkhorin City in 2021. The first session of the “Art Therapy” was attended by disabled people and children from the Solongo children protection center and an exhibition of the works during the art therapy was displayed for the public. The Art Therapy-Calligraphy training takes place twice a year in the fall and spring.

Through their unique services, they also offer an “Art Residency” program,  inviting international artists to Mongolia and providing opportunities for artists of different artistic disciplines to learn, experience, and exchange ideas. In this regard, they have organized joint exhibitions with Fuchs Karahovich, a Czech artist and calligraphist, and Agnes Dubart, a French engraver.
