/MONTSAME/. In
Japan’s professional sumo, the maegashira-ranked wrestler Tamawashi Munkh-Orgil
Batjargal, who competes in the makuuchi division, has had his achievement of
participating in every tournament without missing a single basho since January
2004 officially registered in the Guinness World Records.
Tamawashi B. Munkh-Orgil set a new
record when he completed his 1,631st consecutive bout on the third day of the
2024 Autumn Tournament, continuing a streak that began in January 2004. At the
recent Kyushu basho, he extended this record to 1,748 consecutive bouts. As a
result, the 2026 edition of the Guinness World Records introduces him under the
category “Most consecutive sumo bouts.”
Now 41 years old, he has competed
in professional sumo for 21 years, during which he has won two championships in
the makuuchi division, one each in the juryo and makushita divisions, and has
earned five special prizes. Tamawashi won his second top-division championship
at the age of 37 years and 10 months, breaking the previous record held by
Kyokutenho Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, who won at 37 years and 8 months.
Tamawashi B. Munkh-Orgiil is the second Mongolian sumo wrestler to have his achievements recorded in the Guinness World Records. Before him, the 69th yokozuna Hakuho Davaajargal Munkhbat had five of his professional sumo accomplishments registered in the Guinness World Records.
