Ulaanbaatar, February 12, 2026 /MONTSAME/. As part of his official visit to the Russian Federation, Speaker of the State Great Khural Uchral Nyam-Osor visited the Russian Academy of Sciences and met with its President, Gennady Krasnikov, on February 11, 2026.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Speaker noted that the Russian Academy of Sciences had played an important role in the establishment and development of modern science in Mongolia. He highlighted that one of the most prominent symbols of scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries was the joint space flight in 1981 by cosmonauts Gurragchaa Jugderdemid and Vladimir Dzhanibekov. He emphasized that this historic event was the result of many years of joint research and scientific and technological collaboration, and that it remains a shared source of pride to this day.

During the meeting, the two parties underlined the expanding cooperation between the academies of the two countries, stressing the importance of joint efforts to protect the environment and ecology of Lake Baikal and the Selenge River basin. Speaker Uchral also expressed confidence that researchers from the academies of both countries would produce scientifically grounded and significant conclusions regarding the potential impact of the Eg River hydropower plant project on Lake Baikal.

The two sides noted that in recent years, scientific cooperation between neighboring countries has reached a new stage, and agreed that combining modern technological advancements with long-standing friendly relations would further accelerate future development. It was also mentioned that in 2019, the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician A. M. Sergeev, visited Mongolia and renewed the “Memorandum of Cooperation between the Academies of Sciences,” and that the cooperation agreement was updated again in 2025.

The Russian Academy of Sciences was established in 1724 by decree of Emperor Peter I and is the largest and oldest scientific institution in Russia.
