Environment
Ulaanbaatar, February 6, 2026 /MONTSAME/. A lined reservoir with a capacity of 16,900 cubic meters will be constructed in Songinokhairkhan District of the capital to collect water from the Baruun Salaa River basin, Bumbat Spring, and nearby groundwater sources.
The
project, to be implemented under the “One Soum–One Lake”
program initiated by the Water Agency,
will be financed by Golomt Bank, which was
selected as the “Water Envoy Bank” last
year. The Water Agency will serve as the regulator,
the Songinokhairkhan District Governor’s Office
as the client, and Prestige Engineering
LLC as the contractor.
Once
commissioned, the reservoir is expected to reduce the risks of
flooding, drought, and ice-related hazards, increase surface
water availability, and protect more than
10,000 residents from over 3,000 households from
potential risks. In addition, the project is projected to generate environmental and social benefits,
including increased air humidity and reduced dust levels, according to the
Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
Construction is
scheduled to begin this month and is planned for completion by June 30. The ministry noted that the
project aligns with its policy to protect, conserve,
and sustainably utilize water resources, while promoting
cooperation among the public sector, private entities, and citizens.
