National Freestyle, Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships Begin

Ulaanbaatar, January 9, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The National Senior Championships in Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling have officially begun at the Sports Central Palace.


The four-day tournament is being held in honor of Davaajav Jamts, silver medalist of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympic Games, Honored Athlete of Mongolia, and distinguished wrestler. By naming the championship after him, the organizers aim to commemorate his invaluable contributions to the development of Mongolian wrestling and his lasting legacy in the history of national sport.


On the opening day, medalists in Greco-Roman wrestling were determined. The championship was conducted across the six Olympic weight categories, with nearly 90 athletes competing.


M. Davaabandi (60 kg) and G. Turbold (87 kg) each claimed their second national titles. Meanwhile, Ts. Otgonnasan (67 kg), B. Uuganbayar (77 kg), G. Gankhuyag (97 kg), and B. Nambardagva (130 kg) won their first-ever national gold medals.


In the team standings, the “Tsast Taiga” club, coached by international master of sport S. Munkhsukh, led with 96 points, followed by the “Aldar” sports committee coached by Honored Athlete G. Mandakhnaran, and "Baidragiin Khuchten” of Bayankhongor aimag, coached by S. Munkhduuldakh.


Today, competitions are underway in men’s freestyle wrestling in the 57, 61, and 65 kg categories and women’s freestyle wrestling in the 53, 62, and 76 kg divisions, where medalists will be determined. Approximately 250 athletes are participating in this year’s freestyle wrestling championship.


Beyond crowning national champions, the tournament plays a crucial role in shaping the composition of Mongolia’s national team and identifying future development trends in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
