Ulaanbaatar, May 31, 2024 /MONTSAME/. Khuvsgul aimag of Mongolia is leading in Mongolia with the number of products labeled as organic.

Khuvsgul aimag has numerous local brands of preserved fish, fruit jams, and tea brands. The list of organic products is expanding with sea buckthorn and lingonberry jelly, meat jerky, ready-to-eat meal made from organ meats, garnish, bread with seeds and nuts, and ice cream made from yak milk.

Yak milk ice cream is gaining popularity in the aimag. An elderly resident of Khatgal village, Khuvsgul aimag, O. Duujii operates a micro-business with his wife, making yak milk ice cream. He started his family business making bread and selling it to shops, schools, and kindergartens. Their organic ice cream now is sold beyond Khatgal village.

Mr. Duujii started his family business with a loan of MNT 15 million from an Asian Development Bank (ADB) project to improve livelihoods. Like him, 190 households in Khatgal village are operating small and micro businesses with loans amounting to MNT 605 million from the Integrated Livelihoods Improvement and Sustainable Tourism in Khuvsgul Lake National Park Project funded by the ADB and the Government of Japan.

“There are no overdue or bad loans by the borrowers in Khatgal village,” noted Director of the Revolving Loan Fund Committee of Khatgal Village N. Nyam-Osor.

The Head of Trade, Food Production and Service Division of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry O. Onon emphasized the importance of supporting organic food producers by purchasing their products and said, “Organic foods are not only safe and healthy, they also promote eco-friendly manufacturing and consumption to protect nature and its resources.”
